LIVE STEAM MODEL LOCOMOTIVE COAL FIRED 3 1/2 GAUGE 4-4-0 VIRGINIA UNSTEAMED
LIVE STEAM MODEL LOCOMOTIVE COAL FIRED 3 1/2 GAUGE 4-4-0 VIRGINIA UNSTEAMED. For sale is this 4-4-0 coal fired Virginia un-steamed 3 1/2 gauge model. I bought this a few years ago with great intentions of running this and maybe joining my local Steam Club but all these ambitions have gone to the waste side, also a little out of my depth. I’m no model engineer however, please bear with me on this description. In my humble opinion it has definitely been built by a model engineer. It is a coal fire engine which the boiler has never been fired up. As you can see by the pictures there are a few nuts installing. I’m afraid that’s all I can tell you about the model. The length of the model with tender is 45 and weighs 70lbs. If you are the lucky winner you’re more than welcome to collect the Live Steam in person or within reason, I could meet half way. Im sure this could be arranged later. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will try my best to help. HEAVY ITEM UK and EUROPE only. This is built to the design by Martin Evans and comes with a copy of his book and a set of full size detail drawings. A copy of the articles and drawings he did for the Model Engineer. The locomotive is approx. 21 inches long and has a boiler diameter of. 3.125 inches, the cylinder bores are 15/16 inch diameter and the driving wheels are 0.75 inch diameter. The Locomotive looks to be very well engineered and was made by a competent model engineer. It was ran under steam and then stored for many years due to ill health. This engine does not now have a current boiler certificate and the lapsed one sadly cannot be found. However the Locomotive is complete and turns over smoothly both in forward and reverse gears. All the fittings work and operate nothing is seized or not working. The Locomotive is fully sprung and has sprung buffers to front and rear. There is an enclosed back to the cab with two circular windows, which slides off vertically to allow access to the backhead and at the rear of the cab is a well-made separate lift out coal bunker. The backhead itself has a well-designed water level gauge with drain down valve, a double handled regulator, a blow down valve and a steam turret fitted with U tube to pressure gauge and pipework to long whistle fitted under the chassis. Also in the cab is a useful large water level gauge for the water tanks and the notch type forward and reverse lever. There are two access holes to the water tanks with hinged covers and another access with lever extension to the hand operated water pump. In addition to this pump is an eccentrically driven mechanical water pump. Fitted to the front of the locomotive is a mechanically driven ratchet and pawl type cylinder Lubricator. The boiler has fitted two separate safety valves and a dummy whistle, the smoke box door opens to reveal the blast pipe and fully tubed boiler built to the drawings. The Locomotive is coal fired and there is a cast iron grate with sheet metal ash pan, both in good condition and held by a single pin to allow quick release. This is a well-made Locomotive ready for some basic maintenance and full boiler hydraulic test before further safe steam use. Its appearance could be easily improved with a set of CR Caledonian transfer and cab number plus a lining kit all available form Model Engineering suppliers. Live steam Locomotives in Gauge O, Gauge 1 and also a 3 ½ inch gauge LBSC Juliet. Live steam Locomotive, so please. SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS. One of LBSCs successful designs and full scale drawings are still available, from model engineering suppliers such as A J Reeves and Co. The Locomotive was also featured month by month in the Model Engineer magazine by the designer LBSC in the volumes 95 to 97. The Juliet has a cylinder bore of 1 inch diameter and a wheel rim size of 3.25 inch diameter. This Locomotive was successfully steamed by the previous owner at his local club track but little used. The smokebox still has soot and coal dust in, to confirm this. It has since been stored for many years following his illness. So there is some minor surface corrosion to some steel parts, which will clean off. The Locomotive does turn but is very very stiff and it does therefore need work to free off again. Probably it would benefit from a partial strip down and clean to remove surface corrosion, followed by full maintenance, to get turning over freely. The Locomotives boiler was tested at the previous owners club but currently does not have a boiler certificate and the expired paperwork cannot be found. So it will need full boiler tests before safe live steam use. Currently finished in LMS maroon, and looks to be complete except for the whistle pipe work and whistle itself. It is fully sprung and has forward and reverse motion operated by notched lever in cab. The Locomotive has a mechanically driven. Racket and pawl, lubricator and also a mechanically driven water feed pump. There is also a hand operated water feed pump in one of the side tanks. All the fittings in the cab and on the back plate operate Ok, as does the steam regulator lever. The cab roof is detached on one side i. The soldered joint has come adrift. The locomotive has a fire grate and ash pan held in place by quick release pin. The buffers are fully sprung and there is a coupling hook to front and rear. There is a dummy safety valve cover and dummy whistle to can roof. This little Locomotive is an ideal winter project and with some work would be ready for steaming during the coming spring season. 21.5 inches long and is approx. 7 inch wide, across the buffer beams and approx. 10.5 inch high, to the top of the chimney. This is an awesome estate acquisition. This fine 3.5 in. 3/4 scale reproduction of the B&O Atlantic 1467 4-4-2 was hand built during the great depression by hobby machinist Bruce Achor, a bank receiver in Rockford Illinois, who went on to become Vice President of the Livestock National Bank in Chicago. This incredible coal fired live steam engine took Mr. Achor 4 years to build, completed in 1934. Achor hand laid track on his property and named this line the B L& B Railroad after his 3 sons, Bob, Leonard and Bruce. This information is contained in documentation from an American Banker publication article dated August 10, 1961 which refers to this exact engine build, his B&O Atlantic 1467 (that provided this info here) as well as photos of the larger second build by Mr. Achor, a 1 ½ scale New York Central Hudson 4-6-4 that was the subject of the article. Included with this great treasure are many 1930s and later dated photos during construction and completion of Mr. Achor riding this engine as well as with his children B L & B riding the rails on their property. The completely hand built, fully functioning assembly in order, consists of the engine measuring 38 inches in length, full function coal and water retaining tender with gear driven water feed pump, flat or riding car with brake, box car and caboose. All together this masterpiece measures out to an impressive 13 feet in length. The Copper boiler was fired and certified by Golden Gate Live Steamers, a live steam railroading club in Tilden Park, Oakland CA. Passing inspection with flying colors when I acquired this magnificent engineering marvel in 2005. Although I tested the engine and tender to ensure proper operation when the boiler was certified, I have made ZERO alterations, repairs, or changes of any kind. This is truly in as found, originally built, original paint, completely operational and in my opinion, excellent condition. The documentation and photographs along with the completely impressive presence of this locomotive truly make this a piece of history and True Americana that will only grow in value.
