The Class 45 engines were the most powerful steam locomotives ever operated in Germany. They were built between 1936 and 1937 by the firm of Henschel. After the first two engines entered service, additional 26 units were delivered in 1940. However, the third order for another 103 locomotives were cancelled in 1941, due to the outbreak of the Second World War in favor to the construction of simpler wartime locomotives, the Kriegslokomotiven. The Class 45s were given the operating numbers 45 001 – 45 028. After the war, boiler damage appeared very quickly that made a reduction of the boiler pressure to 16 bar. From 1950 therefore several Deutsche Bundesbahn locomotives were equipped with an outer firebox with a combustion chamber and a mechanical underfeed stoker. The engines with operating numbers 45 010, 45 016, 45 019, 45 021 and 45 023 were provided with welded boilers and underfeed stoker equipment. The engine rebuilt by the Deutsche Reichsbahn in East Germany into high pressure variant with operating number 45 024 (called the H 45 024) was a failure and was retired in 1959. Parts of this locomotive (outside cylinders, trailing wheels and the rear sect ion of the locomotive frame) were used in building engine no. In 1968 the Deutsche Bundesbahn only had three examples left, which were used as braking and experimental engines by the Bundesbahn Central Office in Munich and Minden. 45 023 which was stabled in Munich, and nos. 45 010 and 45 019, which were stationed at Minden. On the evening of 17 October 2005 a fire destroyed the locomotive shed of the Nuremberg Transport Museum in Nuremberg, as a result of which the last preserved example of this class, the 45 010, was badly damaged. It is planned for restoration. This class was initially a faulty design, similar to the DRG Class 06, because of its poor boiler. Following replacement of the boiler and the introduction of mechanical stoking the true qualities of this locomotive became clear. The vehicles were coupled with 23 T 38 tenders. Those with underfeed stokers had 23 T 29 Stoker tenders. Meanwhile the locomotive was re-rollable and optical worked up as a museum-exhibition vehicle in the Meiningen Steam Locomotive Works. Since October 2012 she is seen in the newly designed outdoor area of the Nürnberg Transportation Museum. This is a ONCE IN A LIFETIME opportunity to own a 16 foot long Big Boy!! This is a static display model, does NOT run and will never run. The model is made completely of wood other then a few detail parts that are metal. You can push the model a few feet, but then the drive rods lock up. The model was built sometime in the 60s, so it shows some wear from being moved around. The person shown in photo 5 is 6’3 high to give you a perspective of how large this piece is. The engine weighs about 100 pounds and the tender is about 40 pounds. We will include a certificate of authenticity signed by both Arnie’s Trains owners. This is an awesome estate acquisition. This fine 3.5 in. 3/4 scale reproduction of the B&O Atlantic 1467 4-4-2 was hand built during the great depression by hobby machinist Bruce Achor, a bank receiver in Rockford Illinois, who went on to become Vice President of the Livestock National Bank in Chicago. This incredible coal fired live steam engine took Mr. Achor 4 years to build, completed in 1934. Achor hand laid track on his property and named this line the B L& B Railroad after his 3 sons, Bob, Leonard and Bruce. This information is contained in documentation from an American Banker publication article dated August 10, 1961 which refers to this exact engine build, his B&O Atlantic 1467 (that provided this info here) as well as photos of the larger second build by Mr. Achor, a 1 ½ scale New York Central Hudson 4-6-4 that was the subject of the article. Included with this great treasure are many 1930s and later dated photos during construction and completion of Mr. Achor riding this engine as well as with his children B L & B riding the rails on their property. The completely hand built, fully functioning assembly in order, consists of the engine measuring 38 inches in length, full function coal and water retaining tender with gear driven water feed pump, flat or riding car with brake, box car and caboose. All together this masterpiece measures out to an impressive 13 feet in length. The Copper boiler was fired and certified by Golden Gate Live Steamers, a live steam railroading club in Tilden Park, Oakland CA. Passing inspection with flying colors when I acquired this magnificent engineering marvel in 2005. Although I tested the engine and tender to ensure proper operation when the boiler was certified, I have made ZERO alterations, repairs, or changes of any kind. This is truly in as found, originally built, original paint, completely operational and in my opinion, excellent condition. The documentation and photographs along with the completely impressive presence of this locomotive truly make this a piece of history and True Americana that will only grow in value.
